Check Wood Soundness
If termites have chewed out the wood in your home, it will create a hollow sound when tapped. Take a screwdriver, and tap the handle against the wood. If you hear a hollow sound, chances are you have termites and they have already destroyed the inside of that wood.
Look for Wood Damage
Termites create a distinct shape in the wood where they have chewed. Look for lines on wood beams. They look like long ridges in the wood and will appear smooth. Other obvious signs are piles of sawdust on the floor, tiny pieces of wood that fall while the termites chew.
Look for Termite Tubes
Some species of termites require moisture to survive. In order to protect themselves from the dry elements, they build tubes that stay wet inside. The termites travel through them. These termite tubes look like long lines of dirt that snake around. From a distance, it looks like a giant worm.
Look for Wings
Some termites have wings, but the wings fall off after a time. These winged termites come from a different location and fly off to find a new home. If you find lots of small wings around your home, it might be a recent swarm of termites. Catching this quickly means you’ll have less damage to your home.
Find Termite Holes
Termites create holes to get in and out of the wood structures. The termites often seal these holes. It is rare to find an open termite hole. Instead, look for brown dots covering holes. The brown dots are the substance used cover up the tiny holes.
Find Termite Droppings
The easiest way to tell if you have termites is to find its droppings. Sometimes, you stumble upon the droppings and that is your first sign that you have a termite infestation in your home. Termite droppings look like a pile of spices when located beneath termite holes.
If you’ve find any of these warnings signs of an infestation, call your local Jackson NJ Exterminators to get rid of the pests.
