If you are replacing your countertops, then you will need to decide what type of material to use. There are many different types, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. There are a few things you will want to look for, though, and those are durability, maintenance, and cost to install. Here are three options to consider before you call any kitchen cabinet assembly services to have them installed.

Granite

Granite is a heavy, naturally occurring stone that has a reputation for being tough. If you choose to get granite countertops, then you will most likely want to hire a professional to install them for you. Granite is also expensive compared to other countertop materials, so you will want to make sure it is installed properly. One of the biggest disadvantages to granite is that it can crack if it is not installed properly. The pros far outweigh the cons here, though; since a properly installed granite countertop will usually outlast your home itself. Granite, if not brutally abused, will last forever.

Butcher Block

This type of countertop has gained popularity in recent years. This is a solid wood countertop that is made by gluing many different pieces of wood together with different shades, then cutting it to form a smooth, uniform surface to cut on. These countertops do require more maintenance than other, but this is mainly because they are functional as well. You can use your butch block countertops as an actual butcher block, so no need for a cutting board. Over time this will scar the wood. When this happens, it can simply be sanded down smooth and resealed for a like-new counter.

Laminate

This is the most common type of countertop in use in modern homes thanks to its low price and ease of maintenance. Laminate countertops will not last as long as other types, but cleaning them is easy since you just wipe them down. These are basically a laminate covering over a particle board counter. Repairs are easy and can be done in sections, unlike solid counter choices like granite.
