Nobody appreciates having mice skittering around their home, but it can be difficult to get rid of them. For those who have small kids or pets, you probably don’t want to use poison or set up tracks. Thankfully, there are many natural means for getting rid of mice. In most cases, these options are more humane as well, rather than serving as an exterminator for rodents.

Peppermint Oil
Mice do not enjoy peppermint. While you may enjoy the smell, mice will run to get away from it. By dabbing a bit of peppermint oil on cotton balls and placing them at potential entry points, you may keep mice from trying to enter.

Food Storage
Mice can chew through all sorts of things to get to your food. That’s why it’s important to keep things sealed away. The best option is using plastic, airtight containers which are far away from mice’s reach. You should also move trash cans away from the home as much as possible.

Steel Wool
If you have any holes or cracks that mice might get into, placing steel wool can help. Mice are not able to chew through this and it will bother their teeth. Just place the steel wool into any cracks to keep mice from getting in. You can also use silicone to keep it where you want it.

Onions
Just like peppermint, mice are not huge fans of the smell of onions. The problem is that onions can rot after sitting around for a few days. Onions are also toxic to some animals, like cats and dogs. Make sure the onions are placed somewhere the pets can’t reach them. You’ll also want to place fresh onions every couple of days to avoid them rotting.

Kitty Litter
If you have cats, you may know they are predators or mice. When mice think a cat is around, they’ll often get out of there. Some people believe that placing tubs of kitty litter that has been used can keep mice out. Just place these in potential entry points to keep mice out.
